There's This Boy...

In our family, there is this one special boy. Tonight he sat at the Pinewood Derby not knowing that his life is about to change yet again. He was diagnosed with Diabetes in November 2009. Now just about a year later we will add another disease to his list. Caleb has been diagnosed with Celiac disease (another auto immune disorder.) This is based on lab results from a routine diabetes appointment. Joanie called from Childrens today with news. "Sorry to tell you this over the phone", she started. I think this diagnoses was harder for me than the diabetes. I guess it is because its just one more thing for Caleb. Once Dave was home, we pulled him into our room to tell him the new news. He started to cry. (He's never cried about his diabetes) He sat with me and we cried together. Now, I know it's not the end of the world. Just one more thing to add to our plate. Actually now that I just typed that, it's quiet the opposite. It's about what we will not be putting on Caleb plate. GLUTEN- The new enemy to my boy. :) For such a nice boy, he has a body that sure attacks itself. In March we will see the GI for a Celiac work up. Until then Caleb is on the same diet so that gluten is in his system for more testing.

I'm so sorry Sierra! Caleb is such a stinker, I mean sweet-heart. ;-) I see him a couple of days a week when I go to get Hattie from school. I always say Hi to him and he always gives me the "Oh, hey," like he's too cool to talk to his one-time den leader. :-D It's so fun to see them grow up.
I will remember him and your family in my prayers.

Sierra, call me. Really it's not that bad. It will be difficult at first, but it will get easier. Most people I cook for can't even tell anything I cook is gluten free.

And I can promise you will see blessings in this. Whether they are tender mercies or unforeseen health benefits for your entire family they will be there. Send me a FB message to get my number if you want to talk.

That is such a hard one, but I've been doing GF for a while now and it is easier than you think. It eliminates a lot of things, but expands your cooking abilities. Now there are lots of GF sections at the grocery store- lots of mixes and ideas of things to make at home. I miss bread products sometimes, but I have other yummy foods that I enjoy. Good luck!

That is hard. Poor guy. We're having to learn the gluten-free thing now, too....on top of all the allergies :(. Tera, I had forgotten you ate this way. I'm going to FB you! Good luck Sierra, you're a strong mom, and you'll figure this out!
